このたび、2026年8月26日にネパール中部ラスワ郡をはじめとする地域で発生した大規模な洪水・土石流により、多くの尊い人命が失われ、また今なお安否が分からない方々が多数おられますことに、深い悲しみを覚えております。犠牲になられた方々に謹んで哀悼の意を表しますとともに、被災された皆様、ご家族・関係者の皆様に心よりお見舞い申し上げます。

本学は、初めてネパールを訪れた日本人として知られる仏教学者・河口慧海師の足跡をはじめ、1967年から10年にわたり携わったカピラ城遺跡（ティラウラコット）の学術調査、また近年の学生交流プログラムや公開講座など、長きにわたりネパールの方々と学術・文化交流を重ねてまいりました。このような関係を通じてネパールという国、そして人々に深い親しみを抱く本学として、今回の災害により被害を受けられた皆様のことを深く案じております。

現地では今なお懸命な捜索・救助活動が続けられていることと存じます。関係者の皆様のご尽力に深く敬意を表しますとともに、一日も早く安否不明の方々の無事が確認され、被災地の皆様が平穏な日常を取り戻されますことを、教職員・学生一同、心よりお祈り申し上げます。

Message of Sympathy for the Flood Disaster in Nepal

We were deeply saddened to learn of the large-scale flooding and landslides that struck central Nepal, including Rasuwa District, on August 26, 2026, resulting in the loss of many precious lives, with many others still unaccounted for. On behalf of Rissho University, we wish to express our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives, and our heartfelt sympathy to all those affected, as well as to their families and loved ones.

Rissho University has long maintained close academic and cultural ties with Nepal — from the pioneering journey of Ekai Kawaguchi, the Buddhist scholar known as the first Japanese to visit Nepal, to our decade-long archaeological research (1967–1977) at the site believed to be ancient Kapilavastu (Tilaurakot), and continuing through recent student exchange programs and public lecture events. Cherishing this long-standing relationship and our deep affection for the people of Nepal, we are profoundly concerned for all those affected by this disaster.

We understand that search and rescue efforts are continuing under difficult circumstances, and we extend our sincere respect and gratitude to everyone involved in these operations. All of us at Rissho University — faculty, staff, and students — sincerely hope for the swift and safe recovery of those still missing, and pray for the earliest possible restoration of daily life for the affected communities.
