Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology

Major introduction

Department of Buddhist Studies

This major is divided into two courses: the Religious Studies course, which focuses on the teachings of Saint Nichiren and the history of the Nichiren sect, and the Buddhist Studies course, which focuses on the language, philosophy, history, and Buddhist culture (especially art) related to Buddhism in India, Tibet, China, and Japan.
However, since there is only one major, graduate students are free to take any lectures or seminars related to their research.

This department has a long history and has opened its doors to many researchers, including graduates of our Faculty of Buddhist Studies (Department of Religious Studies and Department of Buddhist Studies) and those from other universities, nurturing many researchers and sending them out into society. We will continue to aim to nurture even more outstanding researchers in order to contribute to the progress and development of research in Buddhist studies and Buddhist culture.

English and American Literature Major

Since its establishment in 1965, the master's program has taught in-depth knowledge from a broad perspective, as well as the ability to research English-speaking literature and languages, as well as the advanced skills necessary for occupations that require specialization. The purpose is to develop the ability of
In order to achieve this goal, we have established a wide range of subjects across the majors of English literature, American literature, and English studies, with a view to literature, language, and classical literature (Greek and Roman literature) from the time of Old English to the present day. We are working to enrich our classes.

In the doctoral program, you will conduct independent research activities as a researcher majoring in British and American literature and English studies, and develop the advanced research skills necessary to engage in a specialized profession, as well as the rich academic knowledge that serves as the foundation. Above all, it aims to foster the creativity of researchers.
In order to achieve these goals, we assign supervisors to graduate students according to their research content, and provide detailed, caring and considerate guidance.

Sociology major

Based on sociological theory, this major aims to develop individuals who can accurately grasp the structure and functions of a rapidly changing society, as well as the issues facing them, and determine the direction in which they are heading.
Our goal is, of course, to train researchers, and we have already sent out teachers to many universities, but we also want to train people who will be active as researchers in private research institutes, and who will work in sociology as national and local public servants or in private companies. There are many graduates who devote themselves to practical work by making use of their specialized knowledge.

In order to teach fundamental theories of sociology, analyze and understand social phenomena from a global perspective, and acquire the ability to make clear judgments, we have established a social research subject in the master's program, and we offer research methodology and data analysis techniques. The focus is on developing the mastery of sociological theory and the ability to analyze real-life social situations.

History major

The history major is divided into four courses: Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history, and archaeology. In each course, students deepen their specialized research and learn methods and perspectives for comprehensive historical understanding, which is a common challenge for history majors. Masu.

In the master's program, we clarify the significance and problems of historical research and teach students to acquire rich academic knowledge and basic research skills.
The doctoral program provides a guidance system that allows students to complete a thesis of a level that will be recognized as an independent researcher in their respective field.

Japanese literature major

We are currently living in a chaotic and uncertain time. Today, as global problems emerge and the international community undergoes major changes that transcend traditional frameworks, Asia, including Japan, is no exception to this and is undergoing a process of intense change.
Asian countries are demonstrating the ability to promote international homogenization. This is creating a situation where it is as if unique culture is being erased.
However, times of external change are always accompanied by introspection. Accurate perspective on specific cultures is strongly required. Given this situation, we need to develop an even greater awareness of not only our own culture but also the cultural traditions of neighboring languages.

The future of Japanese literature research will be carried out by highly intellectual successors who are sensitive to the trends of the times. We would like to make the graduate school, which is the best research and educational institution, function as a place for such training. This realization is based on the efforts of faculty and students to mutually strive for academic study.

Philosophy major

In today's era, where vast amounts of information and diverse values are intertwined, the Department of Philosophy responds to students' diverse awareness of issues and helps them develop their awareness of these issues at a higher level than contemporary philosophical research. Our basic policy is to provide research guidance so that students can explore their own research areas and quickly complete their master's and doctoral theses.

In order to realize this policy, we have established a variety of lectures and seminars, adopted a credit system for the doctoral course, and have prepared a teaching system that enables broad and deep education and research.
