Materials excavated from Sakhalin (Karafuto)
The Sakhalin (Karafuto) excavated materials donated by Mr. Tsuneharu Kubo (former Professor Emeritus of this university) were collected by Mr. Kubo when he surveyed the Karafuto region in the 1930s. Mr. Tsuneharu Kubo led Rissho Archaeology for 28 years from 1949 to 1977, and is well-known for his research, mainly on Buddhist archaeology, as can be seen in his doctoral dissertation "Research on Japanese Private Eras" and his book "Research on Buddhist Archaeology."
The Sakhalin archaeological materials on display were collected around 1932-1935 (when he was a student at Rissho University and around the time he became an assistant in the History Department) during research into ruins around Rutaka (now Aniva) on Sakhalin Island, where his parents were living at the time.
