Yoshida Itaru Collection
Earthenware excavated from the Shomyoji shell mound
This collection was donated by Mr. Itaru Yoshida (Rissho University, Department of Geography and History (Class of 1941), 1920-2006) and contains materials from the Paleolithic and Jomon periods.
Yoshida Itaru is a well-known scholar of Jomon culture, and the Hanawadai style from the early Jomon period (approximately 8,500 BC) and the Shomyo-ji style from the late Jomon period (approximately 2,500 BC) in particular are well known in the academic community as standard type data established by Yoshida.
Additionally, materials relating to the Paleolithic period are on display, including the Kumanogo Site, Tonogayato Site, and Nishinodai B Site, which are the earliest Late Paleolithic sites excavated in the Kanto region.
In addition, the stone tools collected by the herbalist Ito Keisuke (Japan's first Doctor of Science) are included in the "Nihon Sanbutsu-shi" (1837). These, along with the stone tools kept in a storage box bearing the date 1852, are kept in the Yoshida Itaru Collection as extremely valuable documents.
