『日蓮聖人御伝木版画 ― 辻説法 ―』Nichiren Shonin Biographical Woodblock Print: Street PreachingAfter Nichiren Shonin proclaimed the founding of his sect in his home province of Awa on the 28th day of the fourth month in 1253, he entered Kamakura. The city at the time was beset by earthquakes, windstorms, droughts and plagues, leaving the populace aficted with anxiety and fear. This scene depicts Nichiren Shonin, having come down to the streets of Kamakura from the Matsubagayatsu hermitage, preaching on the streets (tsuji seppou) to passersby, and enthusiastically expounding on the Lotus Sutra. The location where he preached would have been crowded as it was on the boundary between the merchant quarter and the residential quarter, and close to the headquarters of the Kamakura Bakufu.*Picture property of Rissho University Library.
