1Origins of Rissho UniversityRissho University's history and tradition began about 440 years ago as a school for priests of the Nichiren Sect of Buddhism, founded in 1580. The Rissho University we know today took shape in 1872 with the introduction of modern educational reforms, and it now boasts a full slate of undergraduate and graduate programs with seven graduate schools and nine undergraduate faculties housing 16 departments managed by Rissho Daigaku Gakuen.The university's name originates from Rissho Ankoku Ron, a book written in the Kamakura Period (1192-1333) by Nichiren Shonin when he was 39 years old. School EmblemRissho University's emblem is a stylized kanji for the word “university” resting atop two blossoms and a branch of a mandarin orange tree.The mandarin orange tree was a favorite of Nichiren Shonin and the fragrance of its lily-white blossoms along with the brightness of its green leaves symbolize the university's commitment to nurturing the hearts and minds of those who seek truth, value justice, and desire peace. The school color, green, was inspired by the evergreen mandarin orange tree, which expresses the eternal vitality and spirit of innovation that ows through the university. School EmblemBlossoms ofMandarin Orange TreeNew LogoIn preparation for the university's 150th anniversary in 2022, Rissho Daigaku Gakuen chose a new logo through a vote of faculty members, administrative staff, and students. The concept of the logo is future-oriented development based on tradition, dynamism, and social involvement. The two intertwining Rs of the logo express our intention to move toward the future and strengthen our ongoing efforts to contribute to society. The 150th Anniversary LogoThe motif of the new logo is insight, the insight of wisdom capable of viewing truth in the past, present, and future. Rissho University strives toward the year 2022 and beyond with the insight of wisdom, the spirit of inquiry and exibility of mind to identify and pursue our social missions based on justice in all our endeavors.
